Debt, The First 5,000 Years, David Graeber in conversation with Charlie Rose
This program is part of a celebration of the connection of David Graeber’s work to the real-life events of our time
It is a puzzling contradiction that paying debts is perceived as an ultimate moral value, higher than human lives, while at the same time money lenders are seen as evil. The Bible holds forgiving debts sacred, not paying them. Since the 1970s it has been one crisis after the other. Underlying issues were ignored during the 2008 crisis. Money runs the system. Current system with its violent bureaucracy is not really a democracy. It is kleptocracy at best. Legalising bribery does not eliminate corruption.
